How ticket transfers and resale work

Organizers decide whether tickets can be given away or resold. Here is how to turn it on, and how ticket holders send or sell a ticket.

Updated October 12, 2026

A ticket holder who can't attend can give their ticket to someone else or sell it, if the organizer allows it. Both options are off by default.

For organizers: allow transfers and resale

  1. In Admin, open the event and select Edit ticket on the ticket. For a new ticket, select Add under Tickets.
  2. Turn on one or both:
    • Allow ticket transfer: the ticket can be given away for free.
    • Allow ticket resale: the ticket can be resold.
  3. Select Save, or Next if you are creating a new ticket.

Tickets with these settings show Transfers allowed or Resale allowed. If you turn transfers off later, people can no longer claim tickets that were sent to them for free.

See people waiting for a resale ticket and active resale listings on the Insights tab under Resale waiting list. Select View to open the waiting list, then Download list to export it. On the Attendees tab you can filter on Has outgoing transfers pending.

For ticket holders: send or sell a ticket

In the Orbi app

  1. Open your tickets for the event. See How to find your tickets in the app and show them at the door.
  2. On the ticket, tap the paper plane button at the top right of the ticket. Send or sell ticket opens.
  3. Choose Smart resale, Sell or Send. An option the organizer has turned off shows "This option has been disabled by the event organizer."
  4. For Sell or Send, enter the email under Recipient's email address and tap Review.
  5. Check the details and tap Confirm. For Smart resale and Sell, the review shows what you'll receive once the buyer pays.

Your ticket then shows On resale, Sale pending or Transfer pending. To stop it, tap Remove listing, Cancel sale or Cancel transfer on the ticket. You can't cancel a sale while the buyer's payment is in progress.

On orbi.io

  1. On orbi.io, open My tickets and select the event.
  2. On the ticket, select Send or sell ticket.
  3. Choose an option:
    • Smart resale: list the ticket so anyone can buy it.
    • Sell: sell it to a specific person by email.
    • Send: give it to a specific person for free.
  4. Follow the steps to confirm.

The person you send or sell to gets an email with a link to claim or buy the ticket. Until they do, your ticket shows as pending and you can cancel. Any answers you gave to the event's questions go with the ticket.

People buy Smart resale tickets in the app or on orbi.io, on the Resale tickets tab. See How to buy resale tickets and get alerts when an event is sold out.

Claim or buy a ticket sent to you

If you open the link in the email on a computer or in a browser, the claim page opens on orbi.io.

  1. Sign in with your Orbi account. The page shows which account you claim with, for example "Claim ticket as" and your email.
  2. Select Claim ticket, or Buy ticket if the ticket is sold to you. Buy ticket takes you to checkout, where you pay like for any other ticket.

After you claim a ticket, you see Ticket successfully claimed and can select My tickets. If the ticket was claimed by someone else or the sender canceled, the page says so.

Rules

  • Only unused tickets can be sent or sold. On orbi.io, the options aren't shown once the event has ended.
  • Only paid tickets can be resold.
  • A ticket you received for free through a transfer can't be resold or refunded.
  • A ticket can't be scanned while a transfer is pending.
