Public and private events
Choose who can find your event, share a private event with selected memberships, and learn why new organizations start with private events.
Updated October 1, 2026
Every event is either public or private. You choose this under Visibility on the Info tab of the event in Admin.
| Option | Who can see the event |
|---|---|
| Public | Anyone can find and access this event. |
| Private | Only people with the link can access this event. You can also share it with selected memberships. |
Change the visibility
- In Admin, go to Events and open the event.
- Under Visibility, select Public or Private.
The change is saved right away and you see Visibility updated.
Share a private event with memberships
When an event is private, you can show it automatically to members of selected memberships.
- Under Share with (optional), select Add memberships.
- Select Add.
- Search for the memberships you want, or pick from the suggestions.
- Select Share with memberships.
To stop sharing with a membership, open the list again and remove it. The event will no longer be shown automatically to its members.
Private events and new organizations
While your organization is under review, new events are created as private and you can't make them public. Once your organization is approved, you can publish public events. You can still publish private events while you wait.
Other things to know
- Private events still need a link to be opened. Use Share on a published event to copy the event link.
- When you post on a private event, you can only send a notification to attendees, not to your followers.
- Visibility can't be changed after an event is canceled.
To limit who can buy a ticket, rather than who can see the event, add required memberships to the ticket. See Can people outside my school buy tickets to an event?
