Dodoitsu Workshop (with shamisen virtuoso Maya Yamao)

Dodoitsu: An Experimental Music Workshop Led by shamisen virtuoso Maya Yamao, who is a Villa Waldberta artist in residence and guest in Munich from July to September 2026, this workshop invites you to immerse yourself in the world of “Dodoitsu” – a traditional Japanese form of short, humorous, and often surprisingly witty songs dating back to the 19th century. Whether it’s love, humor, satire, or the little truths of everyday life, you will write your own lines during the workshop. Maya Yamao will accompany your spoken-sung verses on the shamisen, freely improvising in the rhythm of your words. Your verses – in any language – will thus meet traditional Japanese sounds. Let’s bring the spirit of Japanese wit to life! No prior experience or knowledge of the Japanese language is required.
